Bluestonehenge: A new stone circle near Stonehenge
Archaeologists from several institutions have discovered a lost stone circle a mile from Stonehenge, on the west bank of the River Avon. Led by Professor Mike Parker-Pearson of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sheffield, the discovery has caused experts to rethink existing theories regarding the use and purpose of Stonehenge.
New software set to revolutionise internet research
As the volume of online information continues to grow, internet research can often be hampered by a sense of 'information overload'. In response to this, new 'trainable' software developed in collaboration with the University of Sheffield's Humanities Research Institute looks set to revolutionise internet research.
Garrow's Law – the research behind the new BBC drama
'Garrow’s Law', a new legal drama inspired by the life of pioneering 18th century barrister William Garrow, launched recently on BBC One. The series creators drew extensively on a website developed by Sheffield's Professor Bob Shoemaker, along with partners at Herefordshire and the Open University.
Audiences take centre-stage in new effort to assess the Arts
Despite the undoubted importance of culture and the Arts in all our lives, a recent report has concluded that the cultural sector has difficulty in assessing the impact of its work on audiences. Led by Sheffield researcher Dr Elizabeth Carnegie, a new multi-agency project has pioneered a fresh approach to assessing how we, as audience members, experience culture and the Arts.
As major cities such as Sheffield continue to undergo wide-ranging redevelopment, a project based in the School of Architecture is examining how architectural practice needs to evolve in order to meet the changing economic, social and environmental contexts of contemporary society.
