Knowledge Exchange Funding

Research ExchangeRESS can support you to access knowledge exchange funding opportunities

Funding opportunities to support knowledge exchange and research impact are available from different sources. Two important programmes are available through Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Technology Strategy Board (TSB)

ESRC

The ESRC Knowledge Opportunities Scheme aims to maximise the impact of social science research outside of academia. Funding is available for knowledge exchange activities at any point in a research project and can involve either a single activity or a wide range of activities. This also includes developing existing research to make it more applicable to policy or practice. This is a collaborative scheme. 50 per cent of the resources for the project must be provided by one or more of the partner(s) from the user community through cash or in-kind contributions. Projects can be up to one year in duration.

For further information on this and other ESRC funding opportunities, including the dates of future calls, please visit www.esrc.ac.uk.

KTP

The TSB are the lead sponsor of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme. Along with the TSB, 13 other bodies, including the research councils, sponsor KTPs. The goal of the programme is to strengthen the UK’s competitiveness and economic wealth by enabling researchers to apply their expertise to important business problems. Each project must address a strategic issue and involves a lead academic, an external partner and an associate to help deliver and manage the project. Each KTP is part funded by a government grant with the external partner contributing the remainder of the costs. An SME is expected to contribute a third of the project costs and a large organisation would contribute half. Projects length ranges between 12 and 36 months with the majority of social science projects being of two years in duration.
