We are proud to be part of the University's drive to deliver the principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers
The 'Concordat' sets out seven key principles for funders and employers of researchers in the UK
1. Recognition of the importance of recruiting, selecting and retaining researchers with the highest potential to achieve excellence in research
2. Researchers are recognised and valued by their employing organisation as an essential part of their organisation's human resources and a key component of their overall strategy to develop and deliver world-class research
3. Researchers are equipped and supported to be adaptable and flexible in an increasingly diverse, mobile, global research environment
4. The importance of researchers' personal and career development, and lifelong learning, is clearly recognised and promoted at all stages of their career
5. Individual researchers share the responsibility for and need to pro-actively engage in their own personal and career development, and lifelong learning
6. Diversity and equality must be promoted in all aspects of the recruitment and career management of researchers
7. The sector and all stakeholders will undertake regular and collective review of their progress in strengthening the attractiveness and sustainability of research careers in the UK
A conversational tour of departments 2015
Between December 2014 and May 2015, 26 conversations took place across the university, involving 129 individuals from across all departments to explore the environment for research staff in line with the ‘Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers’. The information from these conversations was utilised to create:
- a Departmental narrative summary of each meeting
- five Faculty level reports to enable a Faculty-tailored response to the ideas shared (links to the right)
- a set of University-wide recommendations of good practice (link to the right)
Through the hard work of the the Research Staff Development Committee and committed individuals in Departments across the University, the ideas generated in Faculties are now being used to effect positive change.
Within a year of the last focus group conversation, there had already been some useful outputs:
- In December 2015, the (then) PVC for Research & Innovation, Richard Jones and the five Faculty Directors of Research & Innovation endorsed a University level set of recommended practices to ensure we continue to imbed these seven Concordat principles in all that we do.
- Feedback from the conversations fed in to various projects relating to talent attraction, for example a process improvement review of recruitment and selection.
- Debate had about which members of staff fall under the category, ‘Early Career Researcher’ have been shared with RCUK to inform their practices. "The information you provided has been incorporated into our RCUK workstream on future leaders, postdoctoral researchers and research specialists. Your tour has directly impacted into evolving RCUK postdoctoral research strategy." (BBSRC)
In 2017, further conversations will take place in both academic and Professional Services Departments to see if the recommended practices are having an effect on the environment.
The focus will be to look for areas of quality enhancement.
