Knowledge Transfer Account

Our KTA Scheme

Knowledge transfer between Universities and their external partners is the process of harnessing technology, know-how and skills in order to develop innovative new products and processes. It is a vitally important process, and key to its success is the University and industry working flexibly and in partnership.

Innovation is a significant driving force of economic growth, social development and job creation. In a knowledge-based economy, it is essential to capitalise on the skills and assets within the knowledge base in order to benefit UK society and its economy.

EPSRC Knowledge Transfer Accounts

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) awarded twelve Knowledge Transfer Accounts (KTAs) to UK Universities. KTAs aim to overcome barriers to collaboration between universities and other public and private sector organisations, and to ensure that the outputs of EPSRC research deliver the maximum economic and societal benefit to the UK.

EPSRC is the largest research council in the UK, investing millions of pounds into research and training each year. The University of Sheffield has secured a £5.7M EPSRC Knowledge Transfer Account, and we have developed a number of innovative KTA activities which stimulate collaborative working and partnerships between the University and industry.

The aims of our KTA are:
• To further develop a culture which values and recognises knowledge transfer.
• To provide and support and enhanced capacity and novel mechanisms to identify, develop and realise commercial opportunities.
• To work closely with our partners to maximise the impact of EPSRC research in order to realise economic and societal benefit for UK citizens.
