Studying with us allows you to follow courses not only in Russian but also Polish and Czech.
Studying Russian at Sheffield
You can learn Russian in a number of ways. Through the Single Honours course you will become a skilled Russian speaker while developing expertise in fields such as Russian history, literature, film, linguistics and visual culture.
Alternatively, you may want to study Russian alongside another subject. This lets you develop linguistic and cultural knowledge while learning an entirely new skill set. You can combine your Russian study with another language offered in the school, with the chance to pick up a new language - such as Portuguese, Italian or Dutch - from scratch. You can also combine Russian with a non-language subject, such as journalism, business management or philosophy.
You also have the option of taking Russian as part of the BA in Modern Languages. This is an intensively language-focused programme which will give you fluency in Russian along with two other languages of your choice.
Within the department you can also study Czech or Polish, either alongside Russian or with other languages offered in the School.

FAQ: Are Russian/Czech/Polish courses more difficult than other subjects?
Some students find the idea of studying Russian, Czech or Polish a little scary. There's little opportunity to learn these languages at school. And what about the Russian alphabet?
Slavonic languages are different! It takes that bit longer and a little more work to become proficient, but the rewards are great and support is always there for you. Don’t be put off by the Russian alphabet: our students are always surprised to find they've got it in a matter of days.

'And' and 'with' degreesBe aware of the difference between 'and' and 'with' degrees. * 'And' degrees - for example Russian and French - involve a 50/50 split between the two subjects. In this case you will spend an equal amount of time and receive an equal number of credits for both subjects. * 'With' degrees allow you to choose a ‘Major’ and ‘Minor’ focus - for example Russian with Japanese. The first subject (Russian) is the major part of your degree and the second subject (Japanese) the minor. Each degree is different, but as a rough guide the major subject forms around 70% of your course and the minor 30%. |
Different levels of RussianYou can begin Russian at either post-A Level standard or start entirely from scratch. The groups follow different routes for the first two years of study. Students with Russian A Level Your A Level skills will be put to use in grammar, comprehension and conversation classes. You will discuss everyday topics, read Russian texts and learn about Russian customs, culture and history. Beginners Level 1 gives you a solid grounding in the language, allowing you to read, write and converse in simple Russian. At Level 2 you will enhance your language skills ahead of your year abroad. |
