Why choose this masters course?
The MSc in Social Science and Health is suitable for UK, European and International students. It is an excellent qualification for those wanting a career as a lecturer or researcher in higher education or a health related career in the public, private or voluntary sector.
The degree will provide a first class training for those wishing to progress to PhD level as the University of Sheffield has recently been awarded Doctoral Training status by the Economic and Social Research Council and is a member of the ESRC White Rose Consortium Health and Wellbeing Pathway. This Masters course also provides an excellent basis for those wishing to develop their career further through picking from a range of modules that can be taken individually for Continuing Professional Development.
The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirmed ScHARR as the UK's most powerful department for health services research, with the largest volume of activity assessed as either world-leading or internationally excellent among institutions returned to the HSR panel. The RAE panel recognised the esteem in which the School is held globally for excellence in health services research and evaluated the research environment as predominantly world-leading or internationally excellent.
Learning outcomes
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of research into the relationship between social power, poverty, inequality and health and its global dimensions.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of the cultural and psychological dimensions of health and ways in which subjective perceptions and emotions impact on health related behaviour and illness experiences.
- An ability to evaluate competing theories and concepts and to apply these theories to real life situations.
- A good knowledge and understanding of, and competence in, the skills necessary to conduct basic applied research in social science and health and the strengths and weaknesses of differing methodological approaches.
Programme Content
Core Subjects: Sociology of Health and Illness; Health Psychology; Health and Social Justice; Research Methods for Health Professionals.
Options: Choose from a range of subjects taken from:- School of Health and Related Research; Sociology; Politics; Law.
How is the programme delivered?
Lectures, Seminars, Tutorials, Enquiry based learning, Project work.
The course can be studied full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 or 3 years).
You can choose to study for a postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) over one year, or a Diploma (120 credits) over one or two years. It is also possible to study individual modules to meet specific learning needs.
Entry requirements / eligibility
Applications are welcome from those who have:
- A first degree (minimum 2.1), an equivalent professional qualification or relevant work experience
- An adequate level of English, both written and spoken (IELTS 7.0)
- Enthusiasm to work hard and benefit from the course environment
