Admissions
Admissions for PhD and MPhil
HEDS welcomes applicants from the UK and overseas. Supervision leading to an MPhil degree or a PhD degree is offered in a wide range of areas of health services research, health economics and decision science, both theoretical and applied. Full time or part time study is possible. The PhD programme extends over a minimum of three years full time and the MPhil over two years. Normally candidates for either degree are registered initially for the MPhil, with transfer to PhD if desired after one year (with backdating of registration) subject to satisfactory progress.
Entrance requirements
The main criterion used in selecting research students is your ability to meet the intellectual standards, usually decided on the basis of previous academic performance. The normal entrance requirement for the PhD and MPhil programmes is a good honours degree (I or IIi) and a Master´s degree from a British university, or equivalent qualification from an overseas university. The University requires also that applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in the English language at a recognised and acceptable level. Students whose first language is not English must have passed either the TOEFL (a minimum of 600) or IELTS (a minimum of 7.0) language test.
Applicants for the ESRC´s `+3´ scheme will need an excellent Bachelor's degree - preferably first class honours.
You also need a good research idea when you apply, as we need to consider both if the idea is appropriate for a research thesis, and whether we have staff able to supervise in your area of interest.
If you are interested in applying to study for a research degree within HEDS but want to discuss your idea, please get in touch with us. If you choose to apply, a formal application must be made by completing the University's application form and enclosing an outline of your proposed research. Once completed, the form, together with any additional material you wish to be considered, should be returned to Graduate Research Admissions Office, who will arrange to have your application considered as quickly as possible.
If you are an overseas student, please include transcripts of your previous qualifications (including English Language ability) and details of the grading/marking schemes used in the assessment of those qualifications.
