SABRE: Hypertonic Saline in Acute Bronchiolitis: A Randomised Controlled Trial and Economic Evaluation

The SABRE study is a randomised controlled trial and economic evaluation of hypertonic saline in acute bronchiolitis in babies taking place in nine NHS hospitals around the United Kingdom.

Acute bronchiolitis is a common, distressing illness affecting young children. A virus infects the lungs, and the airways become blocked, leading to breathing difficulties, particularly in those under 6 months of age. Current treatment (after 40 years of research) involves suppportive care and oxygen. The SABRE trial aims to determine if giving babies nebulised hypertonic saline (salt water sprayed as a mist so they can breath it in) will reduce symptoms and distress for babies, parents and carers as well as reducing the length of time in hospital.

The study started recruiting patients in October 2011.
