Undergraduate
MBChB
With the introduction of the new medical undergraduate curriculum in September 2003, there has been considerable development of new public health teaching, with public health teaching now fully integrated into all stages of the undergraduate programme.
Public Health teaching starts with the "Medicine and Society module" over the first two years of the undergraduate curriculum (Phase 1a and 1b) and continues in Phase 2 and in lectures and small group teaching in the final year (Phase 3b) module in General Practice and Public Health.
In response to GMC requirements, the Public Health Section has been developing a range of new Student Selected Components (SSCs) and Integrated Learning Activities (ILAs). For example, at the start of their medical training, students are now sent out to explore different parts of the city and surrounding areas to understand the importance of links between the environment, the potential for healthy lifestyles and access to health care.
Students also have an opportunity to develop communication skills through developing appropriate information leaflets for patients.
Teaching on patient safety now takes place in Phase 1a, Phase 3b and Phase 4.
