ScHARR strategy

Strategic direction for the School is provided by the Executive Group, chaired by the Dean of School, with Directors representing Research, Teaching and each constituent Section. The School´s principal activities are also reflected in the operation of its Research and Teaching Committees.

ScHARR and Research

ScHARR is ideally placed to conduct applied and methodological health services research. Its staff members possess a unique diversity of skills and experience and are familiar with a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The School pursues six research themes, focused on its constituent Sections, and drawing upon other staff from the widest possible range of disciplines and backgrounds:

The School achieved a 4 in the 2001 Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Research Assessment Exercise; a significant achievement during a period of considerable organisational change.

ScHARR and Teaching

While ScHARR was conceived as a research-led institution the School is committed to the view that excellent research informs and illustrates excellent teaching. The majority of teaching staff are actively engaged in research and the high quality courses showcase our nationally-renowned research. ScHARR is responsible with the School of Medicine for teaching the undergraduate medical degree [230 students] and has it own undergraduate degree (the Bachelor of Medical Science) [28 students] and seven postgraduate degrees, including three by distance learning [90 students]. ScHARR contributed to a Subject Review (Teaching Quality Assessment) rating of 19 in conjunction with the Medical School and Biomedical Sciences with many of the ScHARR-based elements attracting higher ratings.

ScHARR and the NHS

ScHARR has developed close and fruitful contacts with the Department of Health and other NHS constituencies. It is a natural partner of the NHS. ScHARR staff have an in-depth knowledge of the NHS and many NHS staff have honorary appointments with ScHARR. ScHARR provides consultancy to a broad range of NHS clients including health care providers and decision makers, as well as consumer groups and commercial organisations.

ScHARR and Collaboration

ScHARR houses The Sheffield Unit of Trent RDSU which is linked to units at the Universities of Leicester and Nottingham. ScHARR supports statutory health bodies overseas and has partnership arrangements with the far east, and, through its European Office, with other leading universities and institutions in Europe.
