Discover US Programme
'Discover US' is an aspiration-raising programme for pupils in Years 9-11 who have the potential to access higher education but do not have a family tradition of going to university. We support these pupils to discover the University of Sheffield for themselves. To find out about what it is really like to be a student with us. We aim to make every young person we work with believe that University is within their grasp and support them to make a considered and informed decision about their future. Student Ambassadors are a crucial part of 'Discover US', acting as positive role models, sharing their experiences of student life and supporting the delivery of interactive activity-based events on campus.
The young people are selected by their school. Once selected, they start on the programme in Year 9 and continue working with us until Year 11. Activities currently delivered include:
- 'The Student Apprentice' an enterprise day where Year 10 pupils work with entrepreneurs to pitch a business concept
- 'Moving on, Moving up' a transition event for Year 11 considering study skills, decision making and the realities of student finance
All activities encourage young people to develop confidence, problem solving skills and their ability to work with others. In other words, the skills necessary to be successful at University.
