General Conditions for the Undertaking of OSL Dating by the SCIDR luminescence Laboratory

  1. Whilst best efforts are made to sample, prepare and analyse using luminescence dating samples as part of the above quotation no guarantee can be made that absolute ages can be made and reported. This maybe for example due to sample antiquity exceeding the dating technique, sample contamination or incomplete bleaching of sample prior to burial. Should this be the case, all data analysed will be reported and where appropriate a minimum or maximum age estimate given. Full analysis costs will still apply.
  2. The cost of shipping samples to the University, and any duty payable, is the responsibility of the Client. No liability can be accepted by the University of damage or loss of samples in transit.
  3. VAT (UK local Tax) is not included and will be charged where appropriate at the standard rate as applicable at the time of charging. Payments shall be made to the University by the Client on completion of the work or in phases as agreed.
  4. Once work has been commenced, it may be terminated by either party upon sixty days written notice. Upon termination by the Client, the University will be reimbursed for all costs and non-cancellable commitments incurred to date, such reimbursement not to exceed the total estimated project price. Upon termination by the University, the University will be reimbursed for all costs and non-cancellable commitments incurred to the date on which the University gave notice that the performance of the research was to cease and the University shall refund to the Sponsor the appropriate proportion of the fee paid for the unexpired portion of that payment period. Neither party shall be liable to the other party for any delay in or failure to perform its obligations (other than a payment of money) as a result of any cause beyond its reasonable control. including but not limited to any industrial dispute. If such delay or failure continues for at least 90 days, either party shall be entitled to terminate the Agreement by notice in writing.
  5. The University will exercise reasonable care to ensure the accuracy of the advice and information provided but will not accept any liability whatsoever in respect of any claim or claims arising from the use by the Client or by any third party of any such advice and information. The Client shall indemnify and keep indemnified the University its servants or agents against all claims, actions, losses, damages, costs and expenses which may be brought against or incurred or suffered by the University its servants or agents in connection with the carrying out of work which arise as a result of or due to the negligence of the Client its servants or agents.
  6. The University agrees that the Client’s written permission will be obtained before any publication or disclosure of data. The Client will provide the University with copies of all published work making use of the luminescence dates provided.
  7. All payments are to be made in British sterling and to be made payable to the University of Sheffield.
