The University of Sheffield
School of East Asian Studies

Research degree entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to pursue research, applicants are required to meet the academic conditions stipulated in the Regulations for Higher Degrees, which is available on the University's Web page (see right-hand link). Students who, for whatever reason, do not meet these criteria, should contact the department directly.

Students whose first language is not English must have passed IELTS with a grade of 7.0 overall and 6.5 in the written element of the test or equivalent.

We hope that you will discuss your proposed research with the Department.

Applying for a research degree

The SEAS Graduate School welcomes research proposals from students throughout the world in our specific areas of expertise.

Geographical scope

Broadly, in terms of countries, we offer supervision for students wishing to conduct research related to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, the People's Republic of China and Taiwan.

We can also supervise students with region-wide issues, in particular those relating to political economy, migration, and cultural diffusion.

Supervision for comparative studies within the East Asian region, and between different regions of the world, which will involve staff from other department's in the University, also can be offered.

SEAS staff members are happy to discuss your research proposals and to offer concrete guidance on an appropriate scope and focus to complete the degree in good time.
