Entry Requirements, Applying and Fees
Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for SEAS taught postgraduate degrees are as follows:
For all degrees, our first requirement is a good first degree in any subject. This will normally mean a 2.1 from a university in the UK, or an equivalent qualification from an institution overseas. Applicants with other qualifications combined with relevant professional experience may also be eligible.
Our English language requirements are IELTS 6.5 (with 6.5 in the written component), TOEFL 91 (internet test), or equivalent.
Do I need to know Chinese, Japanese or Korean to take a Masters´ course?
Our programmes are very flexible. In the Chinese, Japanese and Korean programmes, we offer a range of levels of language study for beginners, and for students with intermediate and advanced skills. For the degrees in Advanced Japanese Studies, there is a minimum language requirement of JLPT Level 1.
If you contact our admissions team with details of your language skills and qualifications, we can advise on appropriate language options and provide a placement test if necessary.
Many students planning to begin language study from scratch have taken `taster´ courses before arriving in Sheffield, and this can be useful. We ask all students taking beginners´ Japanese to learn the two syllabi scripts, hiragana and katakana before arrival, as these will be used from the first day. (Recommended texts: Let's learn Hiragana ISBN 087011092, Let's Learn Katakana ISBN 087011719X, both published by Kodansha 1985).
Do you offer degree programmes suitable for native speakers of Chinese, Japanese or Korean?
We offer degrees in East Asian Studies, Chinese Studies and Japanese Studies that have no compulsory language study. These are well suited to students – including native speakers of Chinese, Japanese or Korean – who prefer not to make intensive language study part of their degree.
