Information for Departments
All programmes need to provide a supported process for all students to reflect upon their learning and achievements (SGDP). The approach being used needs to be be made clear and communicated to students through course materials and other documentation. Students should be encouraged to take ownership of their own SGDP practice and process, but should be provided with;
- Advance information on SGDP support available in their department.
- An introduction to approaches used in their department to support SGDP at different stages of their programme and across a range of learning contexts
- Accessible tools and learning aids to support their ongoing engagement with SGDP, which can be drawn upon when applying for jobs or further study.
- Opportunities to integrate extra curricula experiences into their self development and to reflect upon these experiences.
- Opportunities to provide feedback on their experiences of the SGDP provision within their department.
Helping Your Students to Prepare for Their Future Careers
Students graduate into a very competitive jobs market. The SGDP can help them be better prepared for presenting the range of skills, knowledge and experience they can offer, and can also help them to demonstrate their aptitude for continuing professional development.
Customising Your Approach to SGDP
The best way to do this is to look at what you are doing already. You could already be embedding the Sheffield Graduate and using one of the suggested models, or a mix of elements from the different models. If your current approach meets your students needs, is manageable for your department, and aligns with the aims of SGDP there is no need to change your current practice.
However, if you are unsure, or if you would like to discuss how you could enhance your current approach, please contact Francine Lindley who will be happy to provide further advice.
