One Big Question (2)
2. How can we get academics and managers to share and support the vision of the Registrar?
We must seek opportunities to demonstrate how everyone contributes. For example, at one time academic tutors had a stronger responsibility in student selection, but as the business has expanded and become more complex, the University has needed to professionalise the process of admissions, with this being centrally managed.
In this exchange professionals are equipped to handle a complex system, working in dialogue with academics who will ultimately teach those students. We need to get the conversations right, between academics and professionals, finding mutual areas of interest, and showing that academics can rely on a group of professional people to deliver what is needed. We need to ensure we have a culture where people are mutually trustworthy.
We need to demonstrate this as it occurs at the most senior level. We also need to share the vision and create opportunities for people to become involved, not just within their own department but in a much broader way. What are the University priorities – and from these what are the common questions we need to address?
I would like the Steering Group to consider broader University engagement and communications in this respect.
