Research Interests
I trained in medicine at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and have subsequently worked in the TNO Institute for Experimental Gerontology, Rijswijk, the Netherlands and the University of Leicester. I took up the Chair at the University of Sheffield and in the Barnsley District General Hospital NHS Trust in March 2000.
My research interests focus on health services for older people including the assessment of health status, acute care, care transitions, case management, intermediate care and rehabilitation.
Since my research fellowship in experimental gerontology, I have maintained an interest in the biology of ageing and age related diseases. This is currently pursued through research on the molecular genetics of COPD, in collaboration with colleagues in the universities of Leicester, Manchester, Oxford, Nottingham, Sheffield and Keele.
I am a consultant physician at Barnsley District General Hospital where I am lead clinician in Medicine for Older People and acting Director of Research and Development, a role which includes the associate directorship of the NIHR South Yorkshire Collaboration for Leadership in Applied health Research and Care (CLAHRC).
Activities and Distinctions
- I have given numerous invited lectures in the UK (e.g. Royal College of Physicians, British Geriatrics Society, Royal Society of Medicine) and abroad (e.g. Australian Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing; University of Nijmegen, University of Social Welfare, Tehran; University of Auckland, New Zealand.
