Local School Children Visit SLC
The School of Languages and Cultures regularly arranges outreach and inclusion events. We see it as part of our mission to engage in activities that promote language learning and study for all. An example is the visit to the School on 6 June 2013 by a student delegation from Wath Comprehensive in Rotherham and Kirk Balk School in Barnsley organised by Dr Caroline Bland.

Translating Czech Castles
Students of Czech have been given an opportunity to translate the website and other materials for a Czech castle, and to go to and stay at the castle as well!
They nominated the project and one of the project leaders for a Student Union Academic Award for Innovative Teaching.

Why students opt for Dutch

New publication: How to Believe
How to Believe: Karl Marx is a new e-publication by Dr Peter Thompson of Germanic Studies for the Guardian 'How to guides'. In this concise publication Thompson shows that for Marx the understanding of religion cannot be severed from an understanding of the social conditions that gave rise to it. His critique of religion is a critique of the world as it exists.

German for Enterprise
The Department of Germanic Studies is currently developing a unique collaboration with local businesses as part of the Final Year Language programme. It allows Sheffield students to put their language skills and expertise as cultural interpreters to good use even before graduation. And local business can profit too.

Postgraduate Colloquium 2013: Shifting Perpectives
The annual postgraduate colloquium of the School of Languages and Cultures will take place on Friday 10th May 2013 at the Humanities Research Institute. The theme for this year’s event will be Shifting Perspectives, and we will be exploring a range of new and alternative viewpoints within the fields of language, society and culture.

Students publish their translation
In February and March 2013, 4th years students of Dutch published their translation of a short story by Bouke Billiet, an up-and-coming Flemish author. This translation 'Palm Leaves and Promises' is part of the citybooks.eu project in which Dutch at Sheffield is an active partner.

Visiting Scholars Spring Semester 2013
The School of Languages and Cultures welcomes two Visiting Scholars during the Spring Semester 2013: Dr Liesbeth Minnaard (Leiden University) and Dr Mohar Das Chaudhuri (University of Calcutta). Both scholars will work with colleagues in the School and offer a number of research papers on their specific fields.

High Impact: Six authors from the Low Countries visit Sheffield
They are all prize-winners, all translated into English and all from Belgium and the Netherlands. Six of the best Dutch-language storytellers are coming together for a tour of six English cities – and Sheffield, with the largest Dutch section in the UK in terms of student numbers, is a compulsory stop.
