The School of Languages and Cultures is at the forefront of national and international research in modern languages across a range of disciplines and periods, historical and contemporary. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), our departments had up to 70% of their research rated as internationally excellent or world-leading. With our Research Clusters (Visual Culture, Film and Performance, Gender Studies, Linguistics, Intellectual History, and Migration, Culture and Communities), we encompass a wide range of areas of specialisation. You'll get to use great learning facilities too. Our Jessop West building, opened in 2009, features great modern workspaces and learning hubs, including dedicated PGT and PGR study space on floors 1-4. We’re in the same building as other arts and humanities departments, creating opportunities for exciting ideas and interdisciplinary work, and you will benefit from a wide range of thought-provoking events held at our Jessop West Exhibition Space and Humanities Research Institute (HRI). These events will also offer you the opportunity to present your own work to a friendly and interested audience if you'd like to.
The University of Sheffield's virtual learning environment offers online access to study material and enhances your learning through interactive technology, enabling virtual interaction between and among students and academic staff. What's more, our stunning Information Commons, with its extensive modern languages resources, opens all day and all night. Postgraduate research students will further have access to the newly-built £1.5m Graduate Research Centre, providing even more dedicated drop-in work space.
