Apply for a placement

The 2017 PlaceME@SMI is a paid placement scheme organised by the Sheffield Q-Step Centre which is a part of Sheffield Methods Institute (SMI) at The University of Sheffield. Placements will take place over the summer of 2017 and will last approximately 6 weeks, working 35 hours per week. Dates will be arranged with the host organisation. You will be paid for the time you work at a living wage rate (£8.80 per hour for Yorkshire and £9.75 per hour for London).

To apply for the placement post please fill the Google Form here.

You will be asked to provide the following information in the application form:

  • Specify which placement posts you want to be apply for as your first and second choices.
  • Contact emails for two referees.
  • Max. 300 words note explaining why you are interested in the placement of your first choice and why you think you are a good fit.
  • Short note describing your software and data analysis experience (max. 300 words)

Please keep a copy of your application (it should be automatically sent to you by email).

Important dates and what happens next

  • Closing date for applications is 17th April 2017 at 5pm.
  • We will notify you by 28th of April if you are shortlisted and if yes, we will invite you to an interview.
  • Interviews will be conducted in May 2017.
  • Conditional offers will be made to successful candidates.
  • There might be a second stage of recruitment for some placements (i.e. another interview at the host organisation).
  • June - September 2017 - placement period (start/end dates will be decided with the host organisation).

Our expectations

As a condition of taking part in the placement scheme, all students will be expected to write a blog post about their experiences, which will be published at SMI blog, webpages and promoted via SMI social media.
