The University of Sheffield
The School of Nursing and Midwifery

MMid Master of Midwifery /

MMedSci Maternity Care

ONLINE, INTERACTIVE AND INTERNATIONAL

This course is delivered completely over the Internet, with no travel or attendance requirements. It is therefore appropriate for any suitably qualified applicant who wishes to undertake postgraduate studies in midwifery or maternity care, wherever they might be located. The University of Sheffield has had a longstanding interest in midwifery practice around the world and has fostered many international links and contacts. This programme provides opportunities for midwives and other practitioners working with women during childbirth to compare their own experiences with those in different cultural settings and reflect on the implications for perceived best practice. The course aims to be both international and multiprofessional. It has been developed in partnership with service users, lay groups and other organisations involved in childbirth. Most students on the course are practising midwives who register for the degree of MMid but non-midwives who register for the MMedSci degree are equally welcome.

This course does not give a professional qualification or entitle an individual to practice midwifery.

Online learning

Online learning enables you to study what you want, whenever you want and from wherever you happen to be. As there are no attendance or travel requirements you don´t need to give up your job, find reputable childcare or any of the other issues traditionally associated with postgraduate study.

Effective communication is central to the success of the course as not only is discussion a key component in the learning process but we also need to counteract the potential for distance learners to feel they are working in isolation. Extensive use will therefore be made of email, on-line chat rooms and discussion groups to include participants within a virtual yet vibrant learning community. Our previous student cohorts have developed firm and supportive friendships whilst studying together, even without meeting face to face.

Flexibility is key to the online learning environment and also the way each unit can be used to explore topics relevant to your own professional interests. This approach fosters student-centred learning, with students supplementing set learning materials with the products of their own investigations.
