MMedSci Nursing Studies Top up NURT95

Who is it for?

Students who successfully complete NURT77: Pre-registration Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Adult) within the School of Nursing and Midwifery will have the opportunity to continue their studies to achieve an MMedSci in Nursing. This separate ‘top- up’ programme comprises a research skills unit and a research dissertation. Successful completion of both these units attracts 60 credits at Level 7 and the award of MMedSci in Nursing. To access the programme students are advised to have a minimum of 6 months post registration experience and must be practicing throughout the duration of the programme to enable the integration of theory to practice.

Overview of structure:

You are normally expected to complete your studies on the MMedSci Nursing NURT95 within 15 months of registering on the programme.
You should note that the University of Sheffield will charge fees on an annual basis, and so you will be asked to pay fees for each year, or part thereof, in which you study.

1. Researching and Research Skills Unit (15 weeks)
The Researching and Research Skills Unit is studied on a non-attendance basis for a suggested period of one full day (or equivalent) per week, plus further reading time, over fifteen weeks.
This schedule comprises twelve study weeks, and three weeks assessment preparation and writing.

2. Dissertation Unit (37 weeks)
The balance of the time spent on the MMedSci Health Care Studies NURT03/NURT07 is allowed for preparation of the Dissertation.

Mode of Assessment:
Researching and Research Skills - Research Proposal (3000 words)
Dissertation - Dissertation (12000-15000 words)

What is it about?

The objectives of the Programme are that students achieving the award of Masters will have developed knowledge and understanding of:

The ability to analyse critically and evaluate the application of research methods.

And the skills to enable them to achieve success in:

The preparation of a research proposal as a basis for the work required to produce a Masters level dissertation.
The demonstration of a high level of competence in the organization of a dissertation at Masters level, and management of their own time and workloads.

How does it enhance practice?

The module is tailored to meet the needs of clinicians working in practice and allows the in-depth study of research methods and consideration of an area of personal/professional clinical interest.

Course Structure:

The programme commences on 25 March 2013.
There is no formal attendance requirement for students undertaking the MMedSci Health Care Studies. You will be allocated to a Supervisor during the early weeks of the Programme and you will be expected to arrange regular supervision meetings with your Supervisor whose role is to:
• provide guidance in meeting the programme objectives
• discuss your progress in preparing for the assessment of the Researching and Research Skills Unit
• supervise you in the preparation of your dissertation

From May 2012
The School of Nursing and Midwifery will be based at Barber House, Glossop Road, Sheffield; opposite the Royal Hallamshire Hospital however teaching may take place across the University site.
