Biography
I joined the University in 1995 following the integration of the NHS Colleges of Health into Higher Education. I have been involved in nursing and healthcare education since 1983 following time as a nurse practicing in emergency care and orthopaedic care.
I am currently Deputy Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and the schools Director of Learning, Teaching and Operations. My role involves management responsibility for staff and the daily operation of the school, financial management and business development and the maintenance and improvement of academic standards in all aspects of teaching and learning activities. I have a Faulty wide role in coordinating Learning Beyond Registration /Continuing Professional Development teaching provision to NHS Yorkshire and the Humber and NHS East Midlands. A have a lead role in liaison with the NHS Commissioning Groups for this area.
My roles within the University have focussed on management activities and have included time as Head of Department, Head of Educational Quality and a period of time responsible for student services within the Faculty of Medicine. I retain a keen interest in teaching and have responsibility for several programmes of study.
Research Interests
My research interests are older persons care, organisational evaluation and development, patient/client participation/empowerment and service user experiences.
Teaching Interests
My teaching interests are biomedical ethics, the professional and legal context of nursing and healthcare, contemporary issues in health care and service and organisational improvement.
Professional activities
I am a peer reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Nursing. (2003 – current) and the International Journal of Evidence Based Health Care (2004 – current)
I am currently External Examiner to the University of Worcester
I act as University Moderator for collaborative studies validated provision in Guernsey
I act as an invited subject specialist to programme validation events in other higher education institutions, including the University of Manchester (internal periodic review 2010) Glyndwr University (periodic review and programme validation 2009/2010)
Work at National level
I was a member of the English National Board Specialist Registry responsible for course validation within other Higher Education Institutions (1996 – 2002)and a member of the English National Board Professional and Educational Standards Group, responsible for the determination of national quality standards within ENB programmes.
I was a member of the writing team responsible for the publication of the English National Board learning resource – Using a Professional Portfolio. (ENB 1996)
