Biography
I trained as a teacher before joining the nursing profession in the 1970s. After gaining qualifications in general and psychiatric nursing I have worked with older people and their family carers in a variety of clinical, educational and research roles for over 25 years. I was appointed as the first Professor of Gerontological Nursing in the UK in 1995, a position I have held since. I also have Visiting Chairs at the University of Kalmar, Sweden, University of Limerick and Edge Hill Universit
I have particular research interests in the needs of frail older people and their family carers in both community and residential environments, and how family and formal carers can work together more effectively. Together with colleagues in the UK, Sweden and Canada, I have developed a range of carer assessment tools that have been translated into over 20 languages and are in widespread use in both clinical and research settings.
Recently much of my work has focussed on developing concepts of relationship-centred care and their application to enrich the experience of giving and receiving care by using the 'Senses' Framework. This underpins Age UK’s Myhomelife programme, an initiative to promote the quality of living, working, visiting and dying in care homes. Methodologically I have focussed on the promotion of participatory approaches to research that engage older people, carers and professionals as partners in the research process. I have well established research links in Sweden, Australia and Canada.
