BMedSci (Hons) Health and Social Care Studies (Acute, High dependency and Critical Care)NURU141

Who is it for:

This programme is aimed at health care practitioners working in the field of acute, high dependency and/or critical care. Students will be required to demonstrate the appropriate clinical/professional background and experience pertinent to the units undertaken, it is therefore important that students are currently working within the relevant area of practice in order to fulfil this particular aspect of the programme. Although not a requirement of the programme, it is advisable for prospective students to have support from their managers.

What is it about?

  • Critically analyse and evaluate the evidence-base relating to health interventions delivered in acute, high dependency and critical care spheres of care delivery
  • Critically reflect upon and evaluate current approaches to care delivery in the clinical setting of the individual student
  • Develop specialist knowledge and skills in order to deliver, and promote the delivery of, evidence based practice that addresses the physiological, psycho-logical, sociological and cultural needs of the client within the context of multi-disciplinary care teams
  • Develop inter-professional learning, team-working and collaboration skills through discussion and reflection on practice with other students/health care workers
  • Evaluate care delivered through the critical application of specialist knowledge and skills to meet the needs of their specific client population, together with a broader understanding of health promotion and health care provision
  • Critically analyse and evaluate the use of professional and clinical decision making skills in order to create and maintain an environment in which carers and clients are enabled to make informed choices

How does it enhance practice?

The DoH (2001) examined the nursing contribution to the provision of critical care for adults and identified that the nursing workforce in acute hospitals need appropriate knowledge, skills and competence to meet the needs of patients with acute and critical illness regardless of where they are nursed. The BMedSci (Hons) Health and Social Care studies (Acute High Dependency and Critical Care) programme offers the student the choice of a number of relevant units around specialities pertinent to the local area including High dependency and critical care, cardiac care, medicine, trauma and orthopaedics and surgery. This allows them to draw on a broad or narrow range of areas relevant to their own clinical area and develop knowledge and skills necessary to provide care that is evidence based and relevant to the needs of the population of the locality in which they practice.

Mode of Assessment:

Each unit will have different assessment criteria, please see the individual unit page for more details.

Students can't commence the dissertation unit until they have successfully completed 80 credits which must include either research appreciation and application or evidence based practice units.

Students have a maximum of 5 years from the start date of the first module to complete this programme.
