The University of Sheffield
Disability & Dyslexia Support Service

Confidentiality and Disclosure

Confidentiality

We encourage students to disclose their support needs as early as possible, so that support arrangements can be made in advance, making your transition to University easier.

Disclosing information about your disability and how it affects you will enable us to discuss with you the different support options available. We can also assist you in accessing external resources like Disabled Students´ Allowances.

Anything you tell us regarding your disability or health condition will be dealt with in strict confidence. We may need to disclose information about your disability to another department so that support can be arranged. An example of this may be arranging extra time for examinations. If you would like any details to remain confidential between you and a particular department, the University will attempt to provide any necessary support confidentially. In some cases however, this may not be possible and the level of support you receive may be affected. If you are concerned about telling the University about a health condition or disability, you can talk in confidence with a Disability Adviser.

We are a confidential service, and you can chose to what extent you would like to disclose information to other departments within the university. If you choose not to disclose, or to limit your disclosure, we will do our best to support you, but you may not be able to access the full range of support.

Although we advise you to disclose information as soon as possible, you can access our service at any point during your studies at the University.
