The University of Sheffield
Disability & Dyslexia Support Service

Supporting Disabled Students

The number of disabled students entering Higher Education increases every year, and it is essential that a supportive and inclusive culture is developed in all aspects of University life. The University, through its equal opportunities policy, is committed to making its facilities and curriculum as accessible as possible to all students, including those with additional support requirements.

The Disability and Dyslexia Support Service provides support to students who have made contact with the service. This support is tailored to the specific needs of the individual student (see www.shef.ac.uk/disability/support for more information) and recommendations are sent to the DLO and/or Personal Tutor to be disseminated to relevant members of the academic department.

There are also a number of adjustments that departments and members of staff can make which will help support disabled students studying at the University of Sheffield and will make courses accessible to all students.

We hope this section will give you a brief overview of how best to support students in your department rather than being a comprehensive guide. It is important that staff are receptive and sympathetic to a student´s requirements, and where appropriate an ongoing dialogue should be maintained regarding these. The DDSS is committed to supporting departments to make these adjustments so if you have any queries do contact us for further guidance.
