ANNUAL STATISTICS FOR COMPLAINTS AND APPEALS ETC.

Comparative Statistics for the last 5 years

The data below sets out the total numbers of UG and PGT student cases over the last 5 years.

Academic appeals and complaints are student-initiated procedures. Faculty decisions will either uphold or reject the appeal/complaint. Occasionally a case may be withdrawn for specific reasons or a student will withdraw from the University before a case is completed. A number of cases will still be ongoing at the end of the reporting period (1st October - 30 September). If students are not satisfied with the decision following completion of either of these procedures they can request a Case Review by a Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

Student Progress and Fitness to Practise are University-initiated procedures, in which a student may be referred to a Faculty Committee. Faculty decisions will either exclude the student from further study or permit the student to continue. Occasionally a case may be withdrawn for specific reasons or a student will withdraw from the University before a case is completed. A number of cases will still be ongoing at the end of the reporting period (1st October - 30 September). Students may appeal against a Faculty decision, following completion of either of these procedures, by submission to the Appeals Committee of Senate.

If a student remains unsatisfied by the outcome from either Case Review or Appeals Committee of Senate they may make a complaint to the external Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) for Higher Education. The OIA may find the complaint justified (in whole or in part), not justified or not eligible under the scheme.
