Language and Etiquette
Language is a very powerful tool. The words used to express ideas can have a strong influence on the way issues are defined and understood.
The aim of the University's Equal Opportunities Policy is to ensure that all students and prospective students are treated equally, irrespective of race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, age, disability, political or religious belief or socio-economic class.
To reinforce this policy, it is important to be aware of the effects of language, being sensitive to the possibility of offending, excluding, patronising, stereotyping, marginalizing or making assumptions about people.
The aim of this short guide is to act as a reference and reminder.
