Repeat a period of study as an external candidate

If you have a level result of F, NC, or NA, you may wish to repeat the period of study, either as an internal candidate (receiving full tuition) or as an external candidate (simply repeating exams / resubmitting assignments). If you wish to repeat internally, details can be found here (UG) and here (PG).

If you wish to repeat the period of study as an external candidate you will not attend classes and will only submit assignments and/or sit the examinations. Since you do not register to attend classes, there are no tuition fees payable but you will be required to pay the appropriate re-assessment/re-examination fee (see below).

UK students who are not in attendance are not entitled to receive a Student Loan. You may choose to remain at your home/permanent address during the year while keeping in touch with your academic departments in Sheffield.

If you are registered externally, your computer account will remain active, your UCard will be updated and you will still be able to access libraries and use the relevant resources. Any queries regarding MOLE should be directed to mole@sheffield.ac.uk

Candidates wishing to resit failed examination(s) as an external student (i.e. without attendance) should complete and return their Re-Assessment Application Form with the appropriate re-exam fee by 14 October 2012 at the latest. No tuition fees are payable and students are not entitled to attend any lectures, classes, etc.

If you register externally for re-sits, UKBA visa regulations say that you cannot remain in the UK to wait for your re-sit examinations. You must leave the UK as soon as possible. If you have a Tier 4 student visa, the University will inform the UK Border Agency that you will be re-sitting and have been advised to leave the UK whilst waiting for the re-sit examinations.

For detailed information on how external registration may affect your leave-to-remain, please contact International Student Support
