Fees FAQs

(Tuition Fees, Re-examination Fees, Writing up Fees, etc.)

I am thinking about coming to study at Sheffield – what will my fees be?
The full list of fees for the next academic session can be found on the Tuition Fees web page. New Undergraduates (UK/EU) will be charged £3375 in 2011-2012. For students who started in 2006 or before the fee is £1345 in 2011-12.

Tuition Fees

Equivalent or Lower Qualification (ELQ) : I would like to do a second degree that is equivalent to or lower than the degree I already hold; how much will my tuition fee be? If you already have a qualification such as a first degree (BA, BSc), a postgraduate degree (PG Cert, PG Dip, MA/MSc) and wish to study for another one at the same level (i.e undergraduate or postgraduate)), the Government is expecting Universities to charge you a higher fee than a student who is progressing to a higher qualification than one that they already have (e.g. progressing from BA/BSc to MA/MSc. However, for students affected by the ELQ policy and entering the University in the 2011-12 session, the University of Sheffield has decided not to charge higher fees; i.e. you will be charged the same fee as other UK/EU students on your course who are studying at that level for the first time. If your course is longer than one year, you will be `protected´ at this rate of fee (subject to the usual annual increase) for 2011-12 and in subsequent academic sessions. This means that, for students entering the University in the 2011-12 session only, the University will bear the loss of funding from the Government without passing any of this loss on to students.
However, the University could begin to charge higher fees to ELQ students entering the University from the 2012-2013 session onwards – details of the exact fee rates will be published on the University´s website as soon as they are available. There are a number of exceptions to this policy such that certain categories of students who are studying for an ELQ, are exempted from the higher fees. Further information about ELQ can be found on the Department for Universities, Information and Skills website at

There is no additional charge made to students who opt to pay their fee in instalments, but you will not be entitled to receive a discount if you choose not to pay your fee in full. If you are a part-time student and your share of the fee is £225 or more then you can opt to pay your fee in four instalments.

Registry Services

Why do I need to complete a Financial Declaration?
Before you can register as a student at the University we need to be sure that you have enough money to support yourself and any dependants (both fees and living costs) whilst you are in Sheffield. Undergraduates (UK/EU) are not required to complete the Financial Guarantee form but must instead, submit a copy of the Financial Notification sent to them by Student Finance Direct.

What should I do if I do not have the required level of funds?
If you have not secured the required level of funds the University advises that you defer entry until your financial position is resolved. The University may request evidence of funds if it has any concerns about your ability to support yourself and any dependants, and may refuse you registration if it is clear that you do not have enough funds.

I am an EU student; what will my tuition fee be?
As an EU student you will be charged at the home rate of fee if you meet the conditions set out in the definition of a Home student.

Tuition Fees

My tuition fee contribution and or tuition fee loan entitlement has been re-assessed by Student Finance England/LA; what do I need to do?
When you receive confirmation of your re-assessment from Student Finance England/LA, you will need to bring a copy of this document to Registry Services (located on Level 6, University House) where staff will advise you.

I am being charged at the international (overseas) rate of fee but I think I should be paying at the home rate; what should I do?
The definition of a Home student can be found on the web page below. The University refers to these rules, and to a student´s residential/educational history and immigration position, when assessing fee status. In order to treat all of its students fairly and consistently, the University does not make exceptional rulings on fee status. If, having read the definition, you believe that you are eligible to pay at the home rate of fee, you will need to complete a Fee Status Assessment form, which can be collected from Registry Services (located on Level 6, University House). If you will have lived in the UK for 3 years part way through your studies, please be aware that your fee status will not change.

I am an architecture student registering for a year in practice; what will my tuition fee be?
