New Students / Offer Holders 2012-2013
Essential information on tuition fees including Tuition Fee Loans, Maintenance Loans, acceptable payment methods, discounts and instalment plans is available at http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/registration/tuitionfees . Please ensure you read this first.
Deferring Payment (UK/EU Undergraduates)
In the 2012/2013 academic year no eligible student will have to pay tuition fees before or whilst studying. This is because you can apply for a tuition fee loan which you will not have to repay until you have graduated, have started work and are earning more than a specified amount per annum.
If you decide not to apply for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance please be aware that you will have to pay your fee upfront, i.e. you cannot defer repaying your tuition fee until after you have graduated.
Is This Your Second Undergraduate Degree?
The Government recently announced that it would not be providing funding to universities for undergraduate students who have already completed an undergraduate degree. This means that it is likely that universities will be charging a higher rate of fee to such students. However, for students affected by the ELQ policy and entering the University in the 2012-13 session, the University of Sheffield has decided not to charge higher fees; i.e. you will be charged the same fee as other UK/EU students on your course who are studying at that level for the first time. If your course is longer than one year, you will be ‘protected’ at this rate of fee (subject to the usual annual increase) for 2012-13 and in subsequent academic sessions. This means that, for students entering the University in the 2012-13 session only, the University will bear the loss of funding from the Government without passing any of this loss on to students.
However, the University could begin to charge higher fees to ELQ students entering the University from the 2013-2014 session onwards – details of the exact fee rates will be published on the University’s website as soon as they are available. There are a number of exceptions to this policy such that certain categories of students who are studying for an ELQ, are exempted from the higher fees.
Further information about ELQ can be found on the Department for Universities, Information and Skills website at
