Banking information for international studentsUK money

Lloyds TSB

In the past Lloyds TSB Branches have allowed students to print off paper statements (from online accounts), take them into branch and have them stamped to make them official.

They are no longer doing this! Students will now need to order Duplicate Bank Statements (either online or by going into branch). This will be free of charge (as long as they haven't previously had a statement, otherwise it will cost £5). The bank's advice is for them to order them a month in advance and it will take about 10 working days for them to receive them. On ordering, students can select which months they require a statement for.

Barclays

Sheffield's Pinstone Street Barclays branch have seen a large influx of international students wishing to open bank accounts. Unfortunately, many of these students are turning up with incorrectly completed letters.

If you wish to open an account with Barclays, you will need to visit a branch with a letter addressed to Barclays Bank and you will need to make an appointment which may take up to three weeks due to this being a very busy time of year for account opening.

You can obtain your letter from SSiD - check out their website for further information.

We have been made aware that there is a telephone scam targeting students.

The caller informs the student that there is a problem with their original visa application and requests a payment of approximately £675 to solve the issue.

Please be aware that these telephone calls are not from members of the UK Visa & Immigration Service. Further information on how to deal with such calls is provided on the Home Office website at http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/aboutus/scams/

It is your job to explain it to them and give details of the added value this experience enables you to offer to their company/organisation.

It is immersed within their everyday life and sometimes appears to be odd and baffling to students coming from different cultures where humour is more likely to occur within certain sets of context (or appropriate “time and places”). “The problem with the English”, as one American visitor complained, “is that you never know whether they are being serious or not.”Humour seems to be the “default mode” (as Kate Fox states in her book Watching the English) of the British. - Fiona, China
