Making an Application

Application by Mail

You must apply for an extension before your Current Leave to Remain expires or as soon as your status changes.

The application must be in the mail before current Leave to Remain expires. Late (out of time) applications can be refused. The University will deem a student withdrawn if the visa expires and no visa application has been made. Applications sent on the date of expiry of Leave to Remain will be accepted provided they are sent by recorded or special mail delivery.

Home Office address for postal applications is:
UK Borders Agency
Tier 4
PO Box 500, Durham, DH99 1WJ

If the previous Leave to Remain expires before passport is returned the applicant's stay in the UK is legal until a decision is made by the Home Office. This applies to in-time applications only.

Applications must be sent with all supporting documents. Incomplete applications will be refused. The Home office will not contact you to enquire about missing documents.

You are strongly advised to keep a photocopy of all documents that you send for your records.

Applying in person

Some applications may be dealt with over the counter at a Public Enquiry Office (PEO) and Leave to Remain extended on the same day. Students choosing to extend in person will be charged £716 plus £358 for each dependant with you in the UK.

It should be noted that the same-day service will only be provided where the form is completed correctly, all the necessary documents are provided, no further enquiries are necessary, and the application isn't particularly complex. If you use this service, please make sure that you apply before the end of your authorised stay.

Students at the University of Sheffield can make in-person applications at the Public Enquiry Office (PEO) in Sheffield. You will need to make an appointment in advance. You should make an appointment only when you have obtained and completed the correct application form and have all the required documents and photographs.

Please be aware that your ID card will not be issued on the same day as your appointment. Your ID card will be sent to you within 5 working days.
