Working in the UK

Working during studies

Most students are allowed to work part-time, up to 20 hours per week during the academic year.

Part Time Work

Remember that Sheffield has a very large student population and there will be a lot of competition for part-time work.

The Post Study Work Scheme

The Post Study Work (PSW) scheme has replaced the International Graduates Scheme. Successful applicants will be allowed to remain in the UK to work for 2 years without needing a work permit or a job offer.

National Insurance

You will need to apply for a National Insurance number but you do not need to have received your National Insurance number before you can start work.

Income Tax

All students who are resident in the UK, regardless of age or nationality, are required to pay Income Tax on earnings and other taxable income that exceed their Personal Allowance.

Working after Studies

Applications for permits can only be made by UK-based employers on behalf of the person they wish to employ. There is no provision within the current arrangements for individuals to apply on their own behalf.
