Short Term Loan
The University has some funds available to help with delays in official funding or unexpected emergencies.
SLC
The Student Loans Company (SLC) becomes responsible for the administration of your financial support after your award authority has completed the means testing and eligibility elements of the application process. They will make the payments to you (maintenance loan) or to the University on your behalf (Tuition Fee Loan) and manage the repayment of loans after you graduate.
Socrates-Erasmus
Socrates-Erasmus is an exchange programme developed by the European Union whereby students can spend between three and 12 months studying at another university.
Special Circumstances Form
A Special Circumstances Form is used to record any absence from University for medical or personal reasons. The form covers periods of absence for less than 7 days, more than 7 days or any absence which may affect assessment/examinations. The form is filled in and handed in at the department.
Spring Semester
The Spring Semester starts immediately after the Autumn Semester examination period and consists of twelve teaching weeks broken into two blocks (one before and one after the Easter Vacation), followed by a three-week examination period when modules taken in this semester are assessed.
Student Finance Direct
Student Finance Direct is a service managed by the Student Loans Company in partnership with local education authorities and the Department for Education and Skills. They will send notice of the support the student is entitled to six to eight weeks after the application has been submitted. It has recently changed its name to Student Finance England.
Student Support and Guidance
A section in Student Services which offers advice and support for students on immigration, disability, financial support, welfare, etc.
Student Support Number
Student Support Number (SSN) can be found on all documents from SLC/Student Finance Direct/LA. It consists of 4 letters (relating to your LA), followed by 8 numbers and finally 1 letter e.g. SHEF01234567A.
Study Abroad
For University of Sheffield students the Study Abroad Programme gives you the chance to study at a university in Australia, Canada, Singapore or the USA as part of your undergraduate degree studies without extending the length of your course. For undergraduate students from Non-EU countries, the programme gives the opportunity for a semester or an academic year studying at Sheffield as part of their home degree studies.
Statement of Award
The official notification of results a student will receive. These are issued after every exam period, usually online via the University’s webpages.
Summary of Results
Summary of Results are provided on request to students who require evidence of modules studied and grades attained so far in the University but do not want an official transcript (which can take up to 15 working days to produce).
