Rules and Regulations

Regulations

Every university has sets of rules and regulations. You should/must read the Regulations. When you register, you enter a contract, promising to obey the regulations. They help you to understand your rights and obligations. The full Regulations are set out in the University Calendar, which is issued each academic year and is available for consultation in the Main Library and via the SSiD Web pages.

A few points from the Regulations are highlighted below. They are not necessarily more important than other points but cover areas which have concerned some international students in the past.

Registration

a. If you, or your sponsor owe money to the University for fees, you will risk:

  1. not being allowed to register for the next session;
  2. not being awarded a degree or diploma
  3. not being able to extend your visa (non-European students).

b. Non-payment of tuition fees by the required dates can lead to exclusion from your course in the current session.

Attendance

a. You are required to:

  1. attend classes punctually and regularly;
  2. be in residence from the beginning to the end of each semester (vacations excepted). This includes examination periods. If you fail exams you will also be expected to be available to re-sit in the summer examination period - second half of August.

b. Non-attendance can lead to exclusion from examinations

c. Non-EU students are not (normally) allowed to stay in the UK unless they are attending a full-time course. See

Non-Invigilated Examinations (all students)

a. Non-invigilated examinations include course-work for assessment, projects, theses, dissertations, extended essays etc.

b. Cheating in non-invigilated examinations. Careful quoting of material from books and articles is permissible, but the material must always be attributed to its sources e.g. by means of quotation marks. A footnote or brackets naming the author and the title of the text plus the dates of publication will be required, as well as a bibliography that provides full references to all the material consulted or used. It is not sufficient simply to list the sources in the bibliography.

Students should take great care when taking notes from books or articles or when downloading from the web pages to always record the source at the time so as to be able to attribute the material if used later.

c. If you cheat in some way the University may take action against you under the Regulations as to the Discipline of Students. This may result in exclusion, failure or other appropriate penalties, even if the plagiarism is not discovered until much later.

Please see " Academic Diary and Student Handbook 20012-13" or " Guidebook for Research Students and Supervisors" for a University Statement on Plagiarism.

d. Ask in your department/school for further information.

Invigilated Examinations (students on taught courses)

a. Mark examination dates in your diary each year.

b. If you find that an examination might be set on a day when your religious beliefs would prevent you attending, you must complete a request for religious observance form, available from SSiD or from webpage

It will then be possible for those responsible for timetabling to take account of your needs. If you do not notify the Examinations Team early enough, it will not be possible to alter timetables for you.

c. If you have a disability or disabling condition such as dyslexia, you must contact the Disability and Dyslexia Support Team in the Hillsborough Centre, Alfred Danny Building.

d. If you are unwell or experience serious problems (such as bereavement) during an examination period, you must talk to staff before examinations are marked.

e. Timetables are normally published three weeks before each exam period commences.

Re-registration

Students on courses of more than one year must re-register with the University each academic year. Full-time undergraduates receive registration information with their semester 2 examination results. Other student groups are contacted by post or email

Undergraduates must receive academic permission to enrol for specific modules for the new year (usually in May before the start of the summer vacation).

You cannot proceed to the new session nor will your UCard be valid until you have re-registered.

Check that your personal details are correctly recorded and updated as necessary. These may be needed in an emergency.

You can update your details yourself on-line.
