Domestic Bills & Housing Costs

1. Private landlords usually require a bond or deposit equal to one month's rent PLUS a month's rent in advance. You may need to pay this before you have opened a bank account.
2. Bills for electricity, gas (not in most University accommodation) and telephone are generally issued quarterly – every three months – and must be paid promptly. In private sector accommodation, you may be able to arrange to pay in monthly instalments direct from your bank account. Check with service provider.
3. Security will be required by the utility/service provider. You can provide this by:
- setting up a Direct Debit/regular payment plan from your bank account;
- having pre-payment meter fitted;
- paying a deposit;
- providing a guarantor.
4. Bills can be paid at your bank if you do not have direct debit or a cheque book. This is safer than carrying cash to company offices.
