Insurance

It is vital that you take out insurance.

All University accommodation includes contents insurance provided by Endsleigh Insurance as part of the residence contract. If you visit the Endsleigh’s web pages you can enter details of your accommodation and check the cover at

If you are living in private accommodation you should check if cover is included in the rent. If it is not then you should arrange this through an insurance provider.

Thefts and break-ins

  1. If your laptop is stolen, compensation will not be available; insurance would cover this;
  2. If your room is burgled, insurance would cover this. The landlord (private or University) will not compensate you.

Accidents can happen anywhere.

  1. Most students do not need medical insurance.
  2. Emergencies can be covered by insurance.

Insurance for self and baggage whilst travelling to Sheffield and first week or two after is strongly advised. This will give you time to obtain a policy for the rest of the year. If you live in University accommodation you will be covered from the day you move into the room.

Real Situations that have occurred in Sheffield

We hope none of these will ever happen to you but they have happened to a few Sheffield international students over the past years.

  1. House Fire
    - Belongings destroyed.
    - Emergency accommodation needed.
  2. Serious Accident or Illness of Student
Parent needs to come to Sheffield.
  3. Theft
    Valuable items lost.
  4. Serious accident or illness of close relative at Home
Student needs to go home at short notice.
  5. Death of student or close relative at home
    - Urgent international travel needed
    - transportation of deceased's remains

None of these can be compensated by the University. Insurance would pay.

 Personal possessions

These should be adequately insured against theft, loss or breakage at all times.

Insurance Cover

Check what possessions insurance cover (if any) is provided in place of residence.

  1. Take out insurance for your residence (cover included with Endsleigh in every University of Sheffield contract).
  2. Check your parents' insurance policy as possessions are often covered away from the parental home.
  3. Additional insurance may be required if you intend to keep expensive items in your room.

Repatriation insurance

This is strongly recommended in case of death or serious illness of self while away from home or relatives at home.

  1. This would allow you to go home to be with a seriously ill (close) relative or to attend the funeral of a close relative.
  2. It would also allow a close relative to come to UK to be with you should you be seriously ill.
  3. In rare but tragic circumstances it allows the insured person's body to be transported home.

Insurance policy for international students

  1. This is offered by Endsleigh Insurance (a company specialising in student insurance schemes).
  2. Please note that the University of Sheffield does not endorse this or any particular insurance policy.
  3. Further details of this and other student policies can be obtained from Endsleigh Insurance.

Medical Insurance

  1. Is necessary for:
    1. short-stay, non-EU students (6 months or less).
    2. the period between leaving home and arriving in Sheffield.
    3. travel outside UK – all students.
    4. for all relatives or friends accompanying/visiting students from abroad.
    5. the period between completing studies and leaving UK (if immigration status is changed from student).
  2. Not necessary for:
    1. students whose courses last/will last more than 6 months;
    2. students' dependants (spouse, children under 18) who live with them in UK.
