Council Tax

Council Tax is charged by local authorities to help pay for certain public services. It is based on the value of property in which you live.
The charge may be reduced depending upon the number of adults living in the property and their circumstances.
Full time students are not liable to pay Council Tax. You need to get an exemption certificate from SSiD and send this to the Council. Part time students are liable to pay Council Tax but may be able to claim Council Tax Benefit.
If you are an international student on a full time course and your spouse is here as your dependant, no Council Tax will be payable. You need to provide an exemption certificate and your partner will need to provide a copy of their passport and visas to the Council.
The spouse of a student is not liable to pay Council Tax IF
- s/he is not a British Citizen and
- s/he is not permitted to work or claim benefits;
- Most non-EU international students' spouses are exempt from Council Tax since they cannot claim benefits.
- If spouse is an EU national, the property will usually attract Council Tax with a discount;
- If the spouse is not an EU national, tax will not usually be payable.
