1. The National Health Service (NHS) provides
- registration and consultation with a NHS Doctor (GP) or NURSE without charge. without charge.
- standard charge of £7.65 for each prescribed item of medication.
- hospital treatment (if referred by doctor) as in– or out-patient, without charge.
PLEASE NOTE: charges are made for dental and optical care which are not available from doctors' surgeries.
2. Who is entitled to NHS Services?
- Anyone ordinarily resident in the UK, i.e. here for a settled purpose. This includes:
- International students registered on a full time course of six months or more.
- Dependants of i. above, if resident (to be here 6 months or more) in the UK.
- Students registered on a course of less than six months may be asked to pay for treatment for any condition (including accidents or illness occurring on the journey to UK) which existed before arrival in UK.
- NOT your visitors from overseas, including non-dependent relatives (such as parents, siblings) who will not be eligible for NHS treatment. They should take out medical insurance to avoid the risk of very large bills.
- NOT individuals entering the UK for the purpose of receiving medical treatment or services.
- To register in Sheffield you must live within the Sheffield Health Authority boundaries.
