University Health Centre

1. The University of Sheffield has a comprehensive University Health Service at a new purpose built NHS General Practice.
- All students of the University (registered for more than three months) are entitled to register for care with the University Health Service. Those here for less than 3 months will be seen as temporary residents.
- Dependants living within the practice boundary only can register with the University Health Centre (subject to the availability of resources).
- Dependants living outside the practice boundary should register with a local GP.
2. Medical Services
The University Health Centre provides a full range of Primary Care National Health Services, details of which can be found on the University Health Centre website and on the Practice leaflet.
3. Academic Support
As an integral part of Student Services, the University Health Service is able to liaise with your Department/Tutor (with your permission) about health issues that might affect your studies and make special arrangements for exams if necessary. We are also able to liaise with other agencies within Student Services, i.e. the University Counselling Service, Disability and Dyslexia Support Service and Student Support & Guidance on your behalf. Other health services/practices cannot offer this level of support.
4. The University recommends that you register with the University Health Centre.
- Other centres or practices may charge for services that are free with the University Health Centre.
- The University Health Centre offers a full student service for students of the University of Sheffield.
- We believe that we offer the best specialist service for students.
5. To register with the University Health Centre you must:
- complete on-line registration pages and medical questionnaire It is important that you do this before arriving in Sheffield if possible - it will save time during your registration interview.
- Complete form GMS1 – this will take place when you attend your registration interview
• bring with you either your current medical card or your NHS number and current doctor’s name and address (UK students)
• international students who have not previously been registered with the NHS, must tell us the date you first arrived in the UK. - be interviewed by a doctor or nurse (if appropriate).
- Have a fuller medical investigation (subsequently by appointment) if the doctor advises this.
6. Females (students or dependants) aged 25 or over:
Females (students or dependants) aged 25 or over: if you are/have been sexually active and have had a cervical smear (Pap test) in your own country/ home area bring a report of this medical test when registering with the Health Service. This will allow us to follow up any abnormalities for you.
It is routine to ask all women over the age of 25 to attend for a test but, as it is not always indicated, you can ask for it to be deferred. (If you wish to have the test done, please make an appointment with a nurse).
If you are 25 or over when you register you will be given an appointment with the nurse to discuss this.
7. Children who have been immunised:
Children who have been immunised: bring their certificates of immunisation with you.
