Living with Others

Moving away from home, getting used to a new city and embarking on University life can sometimes be a challenge.
We hope you’re already having a brilliant time but don’t worry if you’re not: it can take time. The important thing to remember is that there are lots of opportunities for you to get involved, try new things and meet lots of new and
interesting people.
Residential Mentors offer support and guidance to students living in University accommodation and based upon their
own experiences, offer some top tips for settling in:
- Sheffield is an amazing place to live so check out the local shops, visit one of the many parks and walk the route to your department to familiarise yourself with the area.
- Avoid the temptation to go home every weekend but try and find likeminded people to socialise with.
- As well as your flatmates, there are lots of opportunities to meet other people in your Community, on your course and through the Union. There is always something going on, so take advantage of what’s available.
- Don’t miss out on opportunities to make friends from all over the world. You can learn so much about the
world and broaden your horizons. - Don’t be afraid to approach new people. Remember, everyone is in the same boat and they are probably feeling the same way as you are!
- Don’t feel pressured into being a party animal if that’s not what you’re into – maintain your individuality.
