Ingredients

Food

In Britain, manufacturers are obliged by law to list all ingredients in food on the packaging. The first ingredient listed is the one to be found in the largest quantity. If you are concerned to avoid particular products, read lists of ingredients carefully. Here are just a few points which are worth bearing in mind.

1.Animal fat, animal oil, animal shortening, lard, ham, pork, bacon, gelatin(e), glycerol are all meat products, mostly derived from pigs or cattle.

2.Non-milk fat and marine oil may be derived from whale oil.

3.Biscuits, pastry, some cakes and breads, some sweets, jelly, yogurt and many other products often contain meat products. It is always worth checking the list of ingredients if you wish to avoid eating meat products.

4.Some shops and manufacturers label food as ‘suitable for vegetarians’.

5.Beef and other meat products such as sausages and pates often contain pork in small quantities. Check the ingredients. This list is by no means exhaustive; a competent authority should be consulted for further details.
