Our Commitment: Partnership between the University and our students

Policy Statement

"Our Commitment" is a partnership document between the University of Sheffield and its students, setting out individual rights and responsibilities to help students and staff work together in a spirit of co-operation. It has been endorsed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University and the President of the Union of Students, on behalf of all students and is reviewed annually. It is accessible from:
http://www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/ourcommitment.

"Our Commitment" contains guidance and links to information covering a range of topics. These include reference to the University's General Regulations, which contain important information governing your programme of study such as: attendance requirements; assessment and examination results; criteria for the award/classification of degrees; criteria for eligibility to progress to the next level of study; the use of unfair means in the assessment process etc. The relevant sections of the Regulations are described below and can be accessed by clicking on the relevant links on the General Regulations home webpage at:
http://www.shef.ac.uk/calendar:

In addition, the University's Examination Conventions which support the General Regulations may also be relevant to your studies. These include, amongst other things, further information on assessment/examination procedures in relation to extenuating circumstances. The Examination Conventions are available at:
http://www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/exams/conventions.html.

Finally, "Our Commitment" also provides a link to the "Student Rights and Responsibilities" web pages which draw together a series of documents and statements which express aspects of the formal and legal relationship which exists between the University and its students. It includes pages relating to your application, your studies, your accommodation, your safety, your conduct, and your links with the local community. This information can be found at:
http://www.shef.ac.uk/ssid/rightsandresponsibilities.

New students will have received a copy of the University’s Academic Diary & Student Handbook for 2011-12, which contains all the relevant General Regulations in an Appendix (page 163 onwards). The publication is also available to continuing students for purchase in the Students' Union Shop.

Should you have any queries relating to your programme of study, you are advised to enquire first in the academic department/school responsible for co-ordinating your programme of study. If you have a general enquiry, please contact the Student Services Information Desk (SSiD) in the Union of Students building. The SSiD web pages may be accessed at:
