Bereavement

The death of someone who is significant to you is one of the hardest things you will experience in your life. Whether it is expected or a shock, the enormity of loss is something that impacts on you in a very profound way and bereavement can bring practical, academic and personal challenges. Whatever concerns or difficulties you may have regarding bereavement, the University has a wide range of support services to help you...

I am having problems coping with the death of someone close to me

The University can offer a variety of people to talk to or offer information for helping you to come to terms with the loss of someone or practical advice. More information can be found on the Counselling website:

The University's Critical Support Team is there to help students and their families at times of serious incidents/emergencies, or the period following on from distressing events. They can help students suffering from bereavement by talking them through their options and helping them access the support that they need.

I need to take time out from University to attend a funeral

Where you are absent for a period of time to arrange and/or attend a funeral you can use the University Special Circumstances Form to report your absence and any implications for your studies, including where this may affect examinations/assessment. You need to submit the form to your personal tutor or other appropriate staff in your academic department.

I´m worried that due to the death of a family member who helped pay my fees, I will not be able to afford to keep studying at the University.

Home Students: The University of Sheffield along with all other UK institutions are allocated funds from the government to distribute to those students fall into financial difficulties. You can apply for Access to Learning Funds by collecting an application form from the Student Services Information Desk (SSiD) or download one from the website (see right).
