Student Pregnancy
Finding out that you (or your partner) is pregnant may be a life-changing situation. There is a wealth of support and advice at the University for you to discuss your pregnancy, options and plans.
How might things not go right?
Your pregnancy may be unplanned and you may be concerned about the impact this may have on your studies. You may have found out that you are pregnant and are now unsure about what to do. The University has a named contact in Student Support and Guidance who is able to meet with students and offer relevant support and guidance about their pregnancy and future plans.
If you think you might be pregnant
You can use most home pregnancy tests from the day that your period is due. They detect pregnancy hormones in your urine and are very accurate. You can also ask your doctor or family planning clinic for a pregnancy test. You can then decide if you want to continue with the pregnancy or end it. The University has developed a policy for students who are pregnant, which sets out the rights of students and support available both during pregnancy and after the birth.
Ending the pregnancy
If you don't want to continue with the pregnancy, the earlier you seek advice, the better. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service has information on abortion and your options. Marie Stopes International also offers advice and information and you can speak to your GP.
Financial help during pregnancy
If you have found out you are pregnant, you can contact the Financial Support Team on 0114 222 1319 or e-mail financialhelp@sheffield.ac.uk for information and advice about extra financial support from the University.
