The University of Sheffield
Under 18

Parents/Guardians

The University of Sheffield has no minimum or maximum age for admission. We admit students of all ages who can demonstrate that they are able to benefit from the course they have chosen to study and from the social and learning environment which the University provides. However, if a student is going to be under the age of 18 when they start their course they will be classed as a child or "minor" according to UK law. This means we will need consent from the Parent/Guardian to confirm that they understand and accept the implications of a minor coming to study in an adult Higher Education environment.

If your son or daughter has applied to the University, and will be under 18 when they commence their studies, we will contact you when their offer has been made. Contacting the parents of students is not something that we usually do but we will need to make you aware of certain legal aspects regarding students who are under 18. If you live outside of the UK we will also require the name of a UK Guardian (see below).

UK Guardian

Immigration regulations require an English speaking UK Guardian to be nominated if the Parent/Guardian of a student under the age of 18 resides outside of the UK. The UK Guardian should be someone who can be contacted quickly in an emergency situation and cannot be a staff member or a registered student at The University of Sheffield. The role will cease on the student’s 18th birthday.

If you do not know someone in the UK who can act as a UK Guardian then this service can be hired from a Guardianship Organisation. Details of these organisations can be found on the following web site: www.aegisuk.net
