Getting started at Sheffield
You said the Registration Timetable was laid out in a complicated manner and not as user-friendly as it could be.
In 2012, we re-designed the booklet Registration: Your Essential Guide 2012-13 and incorporated the Registration Timetable as a separate fold-out sheet which contained all the main registration events, times and venues. This made it easier to work through the registration process and it was handier to carry about.
You said it was useful to be able to choose your undergraduate modules online.
We had trialled pre-arrival module selection in 2011 for the first time, and in 2012 we extended this facility to more undergraduate and some postgraduate courses. We plan to continue expanding the number of courses which allow new students to choose some of their modules before they arrive.
You said the pre-registration service was difficult to access.
We revised and streamlined the access to the University’s systems, to enable new students to access all of the systems with one set of login information.
You said you did not want to have to queue for long periods of time to register.
We sent earlier notification to new students to take their pre-registration actions before arriving in Sheffield. We completely revised the registration process in the Sports Hall, and managed students' attendance at registration events more carefully. More staff were available to verify personal documents and to produce UCards right away.
You said we needed to provide better information for students who needed to register late.
We developed a web page specifically aimed at students arriving later. The information was also accessible through mobile devices so that new students unable to access the university systems via a computer could do so on their phone or other mobile technology.
