Physics and Astronomy art exhibitionFifth Annual staff art exhibition opens

Art works from more than 30 University staff and students are on display at the fifth annual Physics and Astronomy Art Exhibition from 18 – 20 May.

The collection is open between 10am and 4pm in room E32 of the Hicks building. It showcases the work of artists from a number of University departments including ACS, Information Studies, French and CiCS, as well as the Physics and Astronomy art group.

The exhibition is free to enter, although voluntary donations to Assist (Asylum Seeker Support Initiative Short-term) and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice are invited. Last year over £214 was raised at the show and donated to Sheffield Children's Hospital.

The Physics and Astronomy Art Group was established by Richard Webb, a lab technician in the department. From an initial email, Richard discovered a number of colleagues within the department who had artistic leanings. Since its first exhibition, the art group have opened the doors to artist across the University and the show has grown bigger every year.

The exhibition is part of the Arts-Science Encounters season which works to break down the barriers between disciplines. The encounters bring together physicists, biblical scholars, sculptors, engineers, choreographers, psychologists, biologists and historians of science to converse and debate about the ways they pursue knowledge in their different fields.
